Unborn Jesus Our Hope

Chapter 1 - Excerpt

The Incarnation: One Cell and One with Us

But Who is this that comes into ordinary human history by such extraordinary means? What manner of person is this? How are we to understand Him and relate to Him? C. S. Lewis explains:

The Eternal Being, who knows everything and who created the whole universe, became not only a man but (before that) a baby, and before that a foetus inside a Woman’s body. If you want to get the hang of it, think how you would like to become a slug or a crab. The result of this was that you now had one man who really was what all men were intended to be: one man in whom the created life, derived from his Mother, allowed itself to be completely and perfectly turned into the begotten life. The natural human creature in Him was taken up fully into the divine Son. Thus in one instance humanity had, so to speak, arrived: had passed into the life of Christ. (Mere Christianity)

And so the Christian era begins with the historical Jesus, and the historical Jesus begins here and now in the Incarnation as humanity “passed into the life of Christ.” And in a special way the sanctification of the unborn human state begins immediately. By taking on this unborn human identity, this miniscule cross of human passage, He hallows it, and will do so every day for nine months.

His time in the womb will not be wasted. Just as a martyr’s blood leaves a prophetic and inspirational trail of fidelity to the will of God, so too this time of divine humiliation enhances the dignity of all future unborn babies.

After Unborn Jesus, all unborn babies have a greater claim to be born, and then born again. “Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same nature….he had to be made like his brethren in every respect…” (Heb 2:14, 17).

Because He completely identifies with all unborn children, indeed is one of them, when we lift up and exalt Unborn Jesus, in a real sense we lift up all unborn children with Him. Him we honor as God, they we honor as children created in His image and for His glory.

As we contemplate Him in the womb for the next nine months, we shall learn that in fact Unborn Jesus is the champion of all unborn children. And when we praise Unborn Jesus we strike a spiritual blow at the very core of a perverse culture of death.
